Francesco Guardi
Italian, Venice, 1712–1793
The Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge from the South
ca. 1770–75
Oil on canvas, lined to an aluminum panel

Francesco Guardi was the third and last of the great Venetian view painters, and stylistically the most distinct of the trio. Featuring frenetic, unglamorized views of everyday life in Venice, Guardi’s cityscapes are marked by freer brushwork and often more forbidding atmospheres than Canaletto’s or Bellotto’s. Here he depicts the chaotic commerce of the Grand Canal surrounded by an untidy celebration of uneven awnings, fluttering laundry, creaky shutters, and crumbling architecture. Guardi’s genius, admired by later generations, lay partly in recognizing that Venice without her makeup was still “la Serenissima.”
