This artist chose to present not the noisy metropolis Tokyo, but a nostalgic vision of the pre-modern city hushed by a blanket of snow. Yanagi, which means willow tree, as seen in the foreground, is the name of the bridge that marks the location of a popular geisha district in Tokyo. Geisha were viewed by this artist as being uniquely Japanese—and unaffected (like few things during this period) by modernization and Westernization.
