The Molo from the Bacino di San Marco, Venice
ca. 1740
Oil on canvas

Bernardo Bellotto, Canaletto’s nephew and most talented pupil, painted this major work while working within his uncle’s studio. As was common practice at the time, this work was sold as a Canaletto to one of the many British Grand Tourists who visited Venice.

Depicted here is one of the most recognizable views, looking from the basin of San Marco towards the Molo (quay) with a view of the Piazzetta and clock tower of St. Mark’s in the center, flanked by the Biblioteca Marciana and the campanile (bell tower) of St. Mark’s on the left, and the Doge’s Palace on the right.
