In the 1740s, continental wars disrupted travel to Italy, severely impacting tourism and the art market in Venice. Native artists like Canaletto had to pursue their livelihoods elsewhere. Bernardo Bellotto painted this work while serving as court painter to King Augustus III of Poland in Dresden and Warsaw. Under Augustus III, Dresden was rebuilt in the image of Venice: gondoliers were imported to craft boats for the city’s waterways, and artists like Bellotto were hired to document the city’s wonders, which included the picturesque port town of Pirna. --MAB 2016
