This small painting of Saint Jerome is directly related to several pictures of the saint by Pietro Perugino and shares with them some of the artist’s stylistic quirks, such as the oddly drawn right foot and bulbous shoulders of the figure. Yet, there is an element of pastiche here, for Perugino’s own images of the saint in this pose generally have the penitent saint staring upward up at a small cross or crucifixion, whereas here the object of Jerome’s gaze is instead a small tree. Variations of this sort are typical of workshop practice, and this panel must have been painted by one of the many artists who passed through Perugino’s studio in Umbria or Florence, perhaps Giannicola di Paolo (ca. 1460–1544) or Mariano di Ser Austerio (ca. 1470–ca.1530).
