This painting has traditionally been described as the Annunciation with the Young Saint John the Baptist. The apparition of an angel to Mary is most commonly found in paintings of the Annunciation, and a young child with a lamb is usually Saint John the Baptist, who would later describe Jesus as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Here, however, the infant at left has a cross-shaped halo, which indicates that he is the Christ Child. The painting thus depicts not the Annunciation but, instead, the far less common scene of the Virgin Mary’s vision of Christ’s Sacrifice. The panel is the work of Martino Piazza, an artist whose family workshop dominated art in Lodi, near Milan, during the 16th-century. The unusual subject matter and the interest in landscape are both characteristic of Renaissance paintings from Lombardy.
