Matthes was a multitalented painter who gained a reputation for genre scenes, portraits, and landscapes. He worked in many media, including watercolor, gouache (opaque watercolor), and lithography. Matthes greatly admired the Post-Impressionists in Paris, where he lived from 1901 through 1911. He was particularly inspired by their adventurous use of color, as can be seen in this vibrant Spanish scene. The figures in the center are painted with strong silhouettes in thickly applied bright colors that combine dry and wet brush techniques. This contrasts with the smooth wet-in-wet blending on the sides of the buildings.
