This painting brings together several officially recognized aspects of painting in Paris during the mid-19th century. Since the beginning of the century, large numbers of French artists had been lured to the exotic world of North Africa and the Islamic Near and Middle East. There they reveled in alien subjects, dazzling southern light, and foreign activities. Orientalist paintings—as the works became known—were embraced by the Academy and pursued by collectors. Fromentin found tremendous inspiration in Orientalist subjects, although by the later 1850s, he shunned the traditional, bright Orientalist palette and was instead influenced by Corot, who dominated landscape painting at the Salon during the mid-century. The restrained palette, careful modulation of tonalities, and subtle color balance that are characteristic of French Barbizon landscapes are used here to depict the daily activities of distant lands.
