Label Copy

This painting was identified as the work of Hans Memling when given to the Museum, and while that attribution can no longer be sustained, there is no consensus among specialists regarding which painter might actually be responsible for the portrait. The man’s clothing points to a date in the 1480s, and his hairstyle is one generally seen in Italian rather than Netherlandish portraits, suggesting that the sitter may have been one of the many Italian merchants living in Bruges, a principal trading center in 15th-century Europe.
