The Agnus Dei is an extraordinarily convincing still-life painting, in the same naturalistic tradition as the nearby canvas by Sánchez Cotán, which also employs a serene simplicity to convey a devotional message. The Latin inscription on the ledge below the lamb reads “tanquam agnus” (like a lamb), a reference to Biblical passages that compare Jesus to a sacrificial animal.
