This painting was considered the work of Ercole de’ Roberti when it came to the Museum, but the angular qualities of the figures, which resemble Renaissance art from Northern Europe, are absent from the more classically Italian style of Ercole and his contemporaries in Ferrara. The painting has, however, recently been recognized as the work of Gandolfino da Roreto. Based in Asti, in Italy’s Piedmont region, Gandolfino seems to have been influenced both by the monumental form then developing in Italian art and by the precise details and emotive figures of painting from the Netherlands and France. Once the final scene in a predella that depicted the Passion of Jesus Christ, the composition here is a sequential narrative. The story begins with the Mocking of Christ in the middle ground at left, continues with Christ carrying the Cross in the foreground, and ends with the Crucifixion in the distance at right.
