This image of Saint George is a fragment of a large altarpiece by Cosmè Tura, the principal member of the Ferrarese school of painting. Painted for the Roverella chapel in the church of San Giorgio fuori le Mura in Ferrara, the altarpiece was among Tura’s masterpieces, but when damaged during a struggle between Papal and Prussian troops in 1709, it was dismantled and sold. The central section, showing the enthroned Madonna and Child, is now in the National Gallery, London, while the right wing of the triptych, showing Saints Paul and Maurelius with the patron Niccolò Roverella, is in the Colonna collection in Rome. The left wing likewise included standing saints and an image of Lorenzo Roverella knocking on the gates of Paradise. This head of Saint George, however, is the only part of that panel to survive. Additional sections from the upper and lower parts of the altarpiece are now in Paris, Boston, and New York.
