Rouault’s career began as a glazier’s apprentice in Paris, where he learned the techniques of making stained-glass windows; from the beginning, there was in his work an intensity of color and boldness of line that seem to reflect his early training. From his most important teacher, Gustave Moreau, Rouault adopted the idea that painting should be the expression of inner feeling. These elements, along with intense Christian beliefs, combined to make his art unique in French Modernism. His images of the clown, of which he painted innumerable versions, were identified with
the human tragedy; sorrow prevailed behind their masklike faces.
