The Crowell and Eakins families were intertwined. Eakins’s sister, Frances, married William J. Crowell, the brother of Elizabeth Crowell, who is depicted in this portrait. Eakins was engaged to another sister, Kathrin, whom he also portrayed, but she died before they could be married. In Elizabeth with a Dog, the subject teaches a dog how to balance a cookie on its nose. She wears a white fur hat and her red blouse is accentuated by bands of black velvet. The setting for the painting is the Eakins family home at 1729 Mount Vernon Street. Many of the artist’s genre paintings from the early 1870s feature the same carpet, piano, chair, and neutral walls. The painting remained in Elizabeth Crowell’s possession. She brought it with her to California in 1893, and The San Diego Museum of Art acquired it in 1969 from her daughter.

Elizabeth with a Dog

Thomas Eakins returned permanently to Philadelphia in 1870 after four years of studying art in Paris. Eakins often asked his family members and friends to serve as models. Elizabeth Crowell lived next door to Eakins and posed for him twice during the 1870s. The first sitting resulted in this painting, which shows Elizabeth as a teenager playing with a small black dog in the intimate Victorian setting of Eakins’s living room. The other, Elizabeth at the Piano, is in the collection of the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts.
