Leaving the Theater
Oil on canvas • ca. 1865
Primarily active as a lithographer, Daumier was a keen observer of the world around him and a gifted draftsman with the talent to capture the complexities of daily life with a few well-chosen lines. His caricatures appeared for nearly four decades—from the 1840s through the 1870s—in popular Parisian publications and offered visual commentary on the people, politics, tastes, and ideas of mid-19th-century France. Daumier never sought to make a career from painting and was probably self-taught in that art, but he nonetheless created a body of paintings with the same blunt, powerful depiction of contemporary life that is found in his prints. Leaving the Theater is a typical Daumier study of the human character: despite the crush of the crowd, every person in the scene is entirely self-absorbed, lost in the contemplation of the play they have just seen.
