The sweeping forms of this work convey the threat and unstoppable force of World War I. Seeking a spiritual truth in material and form, Barlach was inspired by Gothic architecture and by traditional folk carvings from Russia. After witnessing the horrors of war firsthand, Barlach became a dedicated pacifist; many of his works were later seized and destroyed by the Nazis. In addition to his work in sculpture, Barlach was a novelist and playwright, and illustrated his dramatic works with woodcuts and lithographs.
