Sully was an influential figure in Philadelphia and eventually taught at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts. In this portrait, he rendered the likeness of another important Philadelphia figure, William Warren (1767–1832), an accomplished actor. Sully was from a family of actors, and therefore it is not surprising that he painted portraits of individuals involved in theater. Warren was born in Bath, England. Warren demonstrated an interest in acting from an early age. As his career progressed, he became known as a comedic actor. Thomas Wignell (1753–1803), a founder of the New Theater in Philadelphia, invited him to perform in a number of productions. Overall, this painting is a much more subdued representation than its companion piece, Portrait of Esther Fortune Warren and Her Daughter Hester, which has richer colors and a more dramatic background and is ultimately a more romantic portrait.
