War and Revolution, 1870–1940

When Monet was just beginning his forays into Impressionism, Degas was already a firmly established artist, experimenting with new subjects and styles, such as modern life and japonism (the influence of Japanese art). Both of these revolutionary elements come together in this painting, which depicts the activities inside the rehearsal rooms of the Paris Opéra, in a composition that is dynamically cropped and energetically painted. In his art, Degas was presenting a whole new aesthetic with little connection to the one preached by Bouguereau, whose paintings Degas “admired” for their Bouguereauté (Bouguereauty).
