The Human Beast
Summer 2012
Best known for his images of animals—which he regarded as symbols of spiritual renewal—Franz Marc also experimented for a few years with abstraction. He was encouraged in this direction by Kandinsky, his fellow member of the Blaue Reiter, but also by Robert Delaunay, whom Marc met in 1912, and even by exposure to Cubism and Futurism. This painting is from one of the important sketchbooks in which Marc developed his radical ideas about form and color and his belief that only through abstraction could the artist transcend the material world. Marc thus virtually abandons representation of the Colored Flowers of his title, using them instead as inspiration for a system of energetic curving forms and colors.

Tradition and Innovation installation
August 2003
“Traditions are a splendid thing: but we should create traditions, not live by them,” explained Marc, a prominent member of the avant-garde in Germany before World War I, who experimented with many media on paper. He preferred to work with tempera and other materials that permitted the juxtaposition of opaque and flat areas with watercolor. Through his dynamic use of color and opacity in contrast with areas of blank paper, Marc successfully created monumental pulsing, rhythmic effects that belie the modest scale of this work.
