Oil on canvas • 1908
Sorolla painted this beach scene during the summer of 1908, during a period of extraordinary productivity when many of his best-known works were completed. The painting was included in his solo exhibi- tion at the Hispanic Society of America in New York in 1909. The exhibition, which set records for attendance, ensured Sorolla’s fame in the United States, and his place amongst the most celebrated artists of his day. This scene was painted en plein air (outside) on the beach near Valencia, and enlarged by the artist with a second canvas. The seam is still visible as an indicator of the artist’s creative process.
