Paintings of Morocco made by foreign artists in the
nineteenth and early twentieth century are often
interpreted as underlining the European ambition to
colonize North Africa, where France, Spain and Italy
vied for control of Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco
(a French colony from 1912 to 1956). Many of these
paintings focus on Morocco’s landscape (desolate,
dusty) and architecture (domed, whitewashed), with
its people (shrouded, huddled) depicted as small and
insignificant. As pictured by Essaydi, the view shifts
to interior spaces—the parts of buildings that casual
tourists never see. The people of Morocco emerge
from their veils and are no longer dwarfed by their
surroundings.
