Lautrec’s largest and most famous poster was also his first, commissioned by the Montmartre impresario and director of the Moulin Rouge, Charles Zidler, to announce the dance hall’s autumn season of 1891. Alongside the nightly concerts and twice-weekly masked-balls that had long made the Moulin Rouge the “rendez-vous du highlife,” this poster prominently featured the club’s latest attraction: the cancan dancer extraordinaire Louise Weber, nicknamed La Goulue (the Glutton) for her insatiable appetite. La Goulue had already headlined at the Moulin de la Galette and the Jardin de Paris when she took the stage at the Moulin Rouge, dancing the quadrille with her impossibly elastic partner—portrayed in ghostly profile in Lautrec’s poster—Valentin le Désossé (the Boneless or Double-Jointed). This celebration of the star-power of a single featured performer was without precedent in the dance-hall posters of the day—a foretaste of the modern “cult” of celebrity.
