A monument among Lautrec’s lithographs, this late work was conceived as part of a series of racetrack scenes. While the others were produced only as trial proofs printed in black, The Jockey combines six colors and was printed in two editions. Together with his love of the track, Lautrec also shared with avant-garde artists of his day—modern masters such as Manet and Degas—a passion for Japanese woodblock prints (so-called ukiyo-e). The influence of these Japanese prints can be seen in the high horizon line and close cropping on the left side of the composition. Punctuating the horizon at right is the windmill that identifies the setting as the Bois de Boulogne, home to the Longchamps racetrack. While the Bois bounds the city to the west, the earth excavated in 1852 to provide the park with a man-made lake was moved across Paris to raise the hill of Montmartre.
