The Elysée Montmartre, the first of the cafés-concerts, opened its doors on the Boulevard de Clichy in 1840. Initially drawing a low-class of patron from the nearby slaughterhouses, the dancehall’s reputation had risen over the decades. By the time Lautrec left his mother’s home in 1886, and rented a fourth-floor studio in Montmartre, the Elysée had become a fashionable meeting place catering to a mixed crowd. This scrubbed and sketchy study, typical of the artist’s early style, is one of four works depicting a masked ball at the popular café—probably the annual ball of the self-styled Société des Incohérants, inaugurated in 1887. The masquerader picked-out in profile against the glaring gas-lamps (electric lights would be installed in 1889 to compete with the nearby Moulin Rouge) sports an acrobat’s leotard and a black domino.
