Sánchez Cótan is best known for the still life paintings he created around the year 1600, but after entering a monastery in 1603, the painter turned primarily to more traditional religious subject matter. Executed in a precise, miniaturist technique on a copper panel, there is little apparent connection between this work and the Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber, but the Saint Sebastian does compare to Sánchez Cotán’s later, more conventional paintings. This tiny painting may be one of the “miniatures” that are listed in the posthumous inventory of the artist’s studio.
