-------

The self-proclaimed "proudest and most arrogant man in France," Gustave Courbet created a sensation at the Paris Salon of 1850–51 when he exhibited a group of paintings set in his native Ornans, a village in the Franche-Comté in eastern France. He continued throughout his career to focus not on the allegorical and historical subjects that were the mainstay of painters at the Salon, but rather, on the people and landscape of his home. This is one of group of canvases by Courbet that depict the so-called Mirror of Scey, a stretch of the River Loue just beyond Ornans, where the river's quick pace is temporarily interrupted by a deep pool with a quiet smooth surface that reflects the light. The site was also of interest due to the presence of a ruined medieval tower on the hill above the river.
