Sloan is often associated with the Ashcan School, a group of urban realist painters who ushered in a new era of American art by seeking inspiration from their local environments instead of concentrating strictly on the lifestyles of the upper class. Before moving to New York, Sloan worked as an artist-reporter for several newspapers in Philadelphia. This exposure to daily realities informed his later work, which presents the streets, saloons, and tenements of lower Manhattan. In Italian Procession, New York, Sloan depicts a community celebration and stresses the prevalence of immigrant tradition in New York City. In his 1939 autobiography The Gist of Art, he wrote about Italian Procession, New York: “These religious festivals in the Italian quarters of New York were and still are colorful invasions of very drab localities. . . . I remember the palette as a violet dominant.”
