Reiffel’s precise destination when he set out from Silvermine in 1925 remains
shrouded in mystery. Whatever the cause for his arrival in California, it was here
in San Diego that he and his wife made their home and settled for the remainder
of their lives. The Reiffels’ first address was in Beck Ranch, in East San Diego,
an area that afforded splendid views of both the bay and the mountains, which
Reiffel immediately set to painting. In the San Felipe Valley depicts the landscape
immediately northeast of Julian, in San Diego County. In 1927, Reiffel was awarded
the P.F. O’Rourke Purchase prize for this painting at the Annual Exhibition of
Southern California Artists of the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego (now The San
Diego Museum of Art).
