Unlike his nineteenth-century contemporaries, Twachtman was drawn to painting landscapes on a smaller, more intimate scale. Later in his career, when he was back in the United States, he focused on landscapes near Greenwich, Connecticut, and Gloucester, Massachusetts. The Shore, however, represents a view of Jersey City. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Jersey City was a hub of port activity and home to various manufacturing industries. At the time that Twachtman portrayed the scene, Jersey City was undergoing a major transformation, and the contradictory pairing of a quiet, but dense waterfront scene in a rapidly changing industrial center likely intrigued him. Furthermore, the city was home to many new immigrants, and its proximity to Manhattan resulted in a steady influx of residents. The view looks northwest from a point at the south of Jersey City’s Green Street Boat Basin, located a short walk from the Jersey City train station and parallel to the Morris Canal.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Twachtman studied art in New York, Munich and Paris before settling in Connecticut where he often painted at the art colony of Cos Cob. He maintained ties with the art world in New York, teaching at the Art Students League and the Cooper Union, and in 1898 was one of the founders of the group of artists known as The Ten American Painters. Primarily known for his landscapes rendered in an impressionistic style, Twachtman also visited Gloucester, Massachusetts where he captured scenes of the seashore and sailing vessels similar to this one.
