The swooning mendicant is described in the text as a devotee of Shiva. He, therefore, like Shiva as Lord of Music, is covered with ashes, has matted locks of hair, wears animal skins, and carries a stringed instrument, the vina. Exhibiting the unconventional behavior typical of a Shaiva ascetic, he is overcome with desire for a beautiful woman and is about to accept a drink of liquor from a maiden.

Domains of Wonder
One of the most celebrated Rajput artists, Chokha, renders a scene from a love story about an ascetic and a courtesan. The ash-besmeared mendicant wandered to the dwelling of a courtesan of such ravishing beauty that he collapsed senseless upon seeing her for the first time. Her handmaidens scurry to revive the holy man with liquor, and others urge a comrade to fetch help. Only Kamakandala sits serenely putting her finger to her lips in a gesture of surprise.
