Myths, Monsters and Maharajas (Ellen Smart, 1992)

Most of Chokha's paintings of Bhim Singh and Gokul Das show one or the other or both of them engaged in the royal pastimes of hunting, picnicking, dallying with the ladies and occasionally worshipping at a shrine. Having little political power and no wars to wage, that is how they spent their days. With great clarity and not a little humor, Chokha captures the grandeur of his patrons and their circumstances.

Here a radiant Bhim Singh, wearing his hunting greens, rides majestically along the lake shore, past a temple on a jungly island. The quarry is strung up on a pole and carried by four coolies. The rest of the retinue brings the regal accoutrements, the hunting dogs, the waterpipe and a brazier full of fire just in case Bhim Singh needs a smoke on the way home.
