Works by William Daniell depicted the scenes of India that Europeans widely considered to be "picturesque" and were fashionable during the late 18th century. The quiet mood and sober palette dominated by sepia browns - so unlike the vibrant colors of India- set the standard for the taste of the time. Artists commmissioned by the British in India as well as amateur British painters who participated in what could be characterized as a "sketching mania," consciously emulated Daniell's style of watercolors.
