William Daniell spent nearly eight years traveling in India with his uncle, the artist Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), sketching landscapes and ruins. In 1794 he returned to London, where he made a career of producing lage-scale engravings and panoramic paintings of picturesque views of India, for which this watercolor probably served as a study.

In the Company Manner (2009), SDMA Gallery Rotation
William Daniell made this watercolor sketch twenty-three years after he left India, where he had spent nearly eight years traveling the country with his uncle, the artist Thomas Daniell, sketching what were considered picturesque views. It may have served as a study for an engraving or section of a panoramic painting for which he was known during his later career.
