Cooking Chapattis on the Hot Spring at Manikarna
Attributed to Fattu
Northern India, Mandi
Opaque watercolor on paper, 1764 (?)
Edwin Binney 3rd Collection, 1990.1143

The activity depicted in this painting reveals itself to be the making of the Indian flatbread chapatti, seen as the circles of dough being worked by the cooks and spread to bake in the landscape around them. The cool colors and expansive landscape compressed into a small frame are common elements of painting from Mandi, especially in later paintings of the nineteenth century.
