Elephant in the Room

Large, brightly colored, and intricately detailed paintings embellished with generous amounts of gold portrayed the lavish courtly life of the Rajput rulers of Mewar, depicting celebrations and other royal events. This rendering of Maharana Jagat Singh II (r. 1734–51) shows the haloed ruler riding in a military procession, although the relaxed expressions, casual stances, and fine costumes of the figures suggest it may be ceremonial. The Maharana’s elephant Bhramargaj, a symbol of wealth, strength, and power, emphasizes the ruler’s royal status and highlights the Indian practice of honoring their elephants with individual names. In Sanskrit literature, “the king’s elephant is an expression of the people’s welfare and king’s virtue.”
