Ram Charan
Maharaj Sher Jang Bahadur Singh with his son Bhagwat Raj Bahadur Singh seated in a carriage
Central India, Sohawal, late 19th century
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper

Sher Jang Bahadur Singh (r.1865–99) and his son Bhagwat Bahadur Singh (r. 1899–1916) were members of the Baghela family, rulers of the tiny state of Sohawal in central India. They are identified in the Hindi inscription on the left side of the painting, while the inscription in Persian letters in the center names Ram Charan as the artist of this work. The painting—a rather unusual image of a king in a horse-drawn carriage in which the figures, the horses, and the carriage are out of scale with one another—may have been made to signal that Bhagwat Bahadur Singh was intended to succeed Sher Jang Bahadur Singh, even though he was only an adopted son.
