A standing youth in a striped coat
Iran, 17th century
Ink, opaque watercolor and gold on paper
The willowy young man shown here, standing in a coy pose and holding a jug of wine, represents the height of courtly beauty and fashion in Iran in the 1600s. Paintings of handsome subjects such as this would have been placed in albums along with drawings and samples of calligraphy. The subject and style of this painting were popularized by the artist Riza Abbasi, and his works were so well-known that many copies were made. The signature indicates that this painting was made by him or one of his many followers.
