Company School painting flourished in Calcutta, where displaced painters from declining provincial courts sought new patrons. Their expertise in producing miniature paintings equipped them with skills to adapt to European conventions as well as meet the British patrons’ penchant for precision and details. In this example the distinctive belt and sash and the shading on various parts of the robe convey a sense of volume and dimensionality. After photography emerged in the late 1840s, Company School painters gradually fell out of demand in the image-making market. Photographs provided even more precise documents for British patrons who wished to understand the land and people of the new colony.
