Claude Martin, the French military advisor to the ruler of Lucknow, Asaf al-Dawla (r. 1754-75), is believed to be the patron of the set of Indian bird studies from which this image comes. In each painting, the bird looms at the center of the composition, greater in scale than all the surrounding elements, and with a prominent boomerang-shaped shadow underneath. The bird here can be identified as the Egyptian Vulture, which is found in Europe, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent. This painting is numbered 603, indicating that Martin’s original set once included several hundred works. They seem to have been organized by type—waders, birds of prey, etc.
