Much of this great epic deals with the wars between the Persians and the Central Asian Turks. Bijan was a young Persian warrior who had been caught by the Turkish ruler, Afrasiyab, after having fallen in love with his daughter. The painting on this page depicts the Persian hero Rustam who, having defeated Afrasiyab, brings Bijan in triumph back to Persia where he is greeted by the king, Kay Khosrow.
One of the earliest surviving illustrated manuscripts from Iran, the colophon reveals that it was made for Qiwamuddawla wa'l-Din Hasan and completed in 1341.
