Domains of Wonder
The emperor Akbar had a profound effect on the development of the Mughal idiom. He had a taste for adventure and violence, and his artists often captured the climactic moment of a decisive event.
Akbar, a Muslim, took a keen interest in the religions of the land he ruled, and he would commission his artists to illustrate copies of sacred Hindu texts, such as the Harivamsha (“Genealogy of Krishna”). Passages from Hindu mythology supplied ample opportunity to depict moments of high drama, as when the demon Naraka gets sliced by the discus of the god Krishna. Also shown here is the scene when Krishna's brother prepares to strike his brother-in-law with a gold bar, because the latter cheated him in the dice game.
