Lyric Visions
In this page produced at the imperial Mughal court of Jahangir in India, the famous Persian writer, Sad'i of Shiraz (1183–1291) describes the character of dervishes, or Sufi holy men. An image of Majnun has been placed in the illuminated border, as an exemplar, even though he is not actually a Sufi dervish. Chains and a bowl, the paraphernalia of an ascetical dervish, accompany his familiar skeletal form, as he stretches out his hand in friendship to the deer. Thus, the imagery of Majnun, popularized by the work of Nezami, stands alone as an archetype for the ideal holy man even in India.
