Among all the tributary rulers of the princely states of Rajasthan, the Rajput kings from Bikaner were the most closely allied with the Mughal emperor. Nobles from the Rajput court at Bikaner accompanied the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb on his lengthy military campaigns to win the territories of the Deccan in southwestern India. During this period, paintings were made by Mughal artists for Bikaner kings or by Bikaner artists who had trained in the Mughal court; Mughal and Deccani paintings were collected by Bikaner kings and copied by Bikaner artists. In this way, the boundaries distinguishing Mughal from Rajput could become blurred. In this painting, the expanse of the stark plain background, and the geometric quality of the leaves of the trees behind the wall indicate a Rajput hand.
