Lyric Visions
Multiple vignettes, separated from one another by rocky escarpments, contain scenes that were amusing for this Deccani artist to create, as the inscription on the back, stating lilapata or play picture, indicates. A mythical bird attacks a dragon; a lion attacks a boar; a lady reminiscent of Shirin slays a lion; and among these various scenes, the emaciated Majnun with a parrot perching on his head sits under a tree while Leyli and her handmaid have come to hear him recite his poetry. In southern India of the late 18th century the story of Leyli and Majnun had become such a favorite that an image emblematic of the story, that of her visit to her beloved ascetic under a tree, is included among an unrelated grouping of wondrous and remarkable scenes.
