Elephant in the Room
(Ladan Akbarnia)
Artists at the Rajput court of Kota in Rajasthan produced dynamic depictions of elephants in both drawing and painting, creating thick, calligraphic lines with black ink, and adding calculated patches of vibrant color to create a palpable sense of energy and motion. Composed of several layers of vigorous drawing in red and black ink, this study of a raja’s royal procession could stand as a finished work in its own right. Tiny holes perforating the primary lines of the image, however, suggest that the drawing functioned as a pounce, a means of copying an existing design by dusting charcoal powder over a perforated pattern taken from the outline of the original.
