A Hindi inscription on the reverse identifies this scene as the ghat, or riverbank, at Jaunpur. Situated on the Gomti River north of Banaras in Uttar Pradesh, Jaunpur was once a great cultural center. Even today the city is famous for its fifteenth century mosques and schools and for its mid-sixteenth century bridge built during the reign of the great Mughal Akbar. This is one of a group of five paintings by a Jaipur painter who took up Western perspective with a vengeance. He has fancifully populated the city with Europeans.
