Elephant in the Room
(Ladan Akbarnia)
Although this fragmented album folio represents the rich culture of album-making in seventeenth-century India, the vibrant, earthy tones brightening both the portrait of a mahout driving an adorned, running elephant and the pasted floral strips decorating its borders distinguish this Rajasthani work from its Mughal and Deccani counterparts.
