In an effort to reunite the lovers Radha and Krishna, a messenger was sent to persuade the stubborn Radha to visit Krishna in his bower. The painting illustrates both Radha and Krishna engaging with the same messenger at two different points in time. This scene comes from the Gita Govinda , an erotic poem composed in the twelfth century by the Bengali poet Javadeva. The poem celebrates the lovers’ passionate pursuit of one another, and serves as an allegory for one’s personal path for union with God.
