Tomb of Itimad al-Daula
India, Agra
Opaque watercolor on paper, ca. 1846
The great monuments of India were a popular subject for eighteenth and nineteenth century artists—both the British ones curious about the new world of India, and the Indian ones working on behalf of European patrons. This particular tomb, with its entire white marble surface covered by inlay of semi-precious stones, was a favorite. It was built between 1626 and 1628 by Nur Jahan, the wife of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Both of her parents are buried there although the building is now known by her father’s title at court, Itimad al-Daula (“Pillar of the State”).
