European images have stimulated great interest in India from their first appearance in the subcontinent in the sixteenth century. Not only have Western art techniques such as foreshortening and chiaroscuro been introduced to the Indian artist through prints and paintings, but cultural information, such as the size of European houses, has been transmitted as well. This picture has no inscriptions to reveal where or when it was made, but the paper and technique of painting are Indian. The building itself is not Indian; neither is the clothing worn by the strolling figures.
